Grant County Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 7,279 people, 3,648 households, and 2,156 families residing in the county. The population density was 12 people per square mile (4/km²). There were 3,456 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.61% White, 0.01% Black or African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.40% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 52.0% were of German, 16.3% Norwegian and 5.4% American ancestry according to Census 2000.

In the county, the population was spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 19.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $33,088, and the median income for a family was $40,407. Males had a median income of $27,941 versus $20,192 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,543. About 7.50% of families and 9.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.80% of those under age 18 and 10.30% of those age 65 or over.

South Dakota State University, located in Brookings, is the state's largest university. SDSU's educational base includes degrees in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, agricultural engineering, engineering physics, computer and information science, and economics, just to name a few.

SDSU's engineering programs are practical. Students learn from a faculty that has industrial design experience. They learn from business leaders who are currently in the industry. And they learn by experience-both in a lab setting and in a business setting.

The Manufacturing engineering Technology Program, implementing in response to the needs of industry in South Dakota, gives students experience in the production aspect of business.

Lake Area Technical Institute was founded in 1965. Today, Lake Area Tech serves approximately 1300 full-time and part-time students in 22 programs of study and 2500 students through the Business and Industry Training program each year. Students who enroll at Lake Area Tech come from South Dakota, the borders of North Dakota and Minnesota and many other parts of the United States. The placement rate of graduates in a training related field is consistently over ninety percent. The institute is located at 230 11th Street Northeast and lies on a beautiful 30 acre campus. Lake Area Tech students are trained on state-of-the-art equipment in a state-of-the-art facility. Lake Area Tech employs approximately 145 staff. Lake Area Tech is recognized for its excellence and innovative techniques in delivering education regionally and nationally. Training has been provided for many years to CASE/New Holland technicians who come to Lake Area Tech from all over the world. Lake Area Tech has recently contracted with Singapore Airlines to deliver training to their aviation maintenance technicians. And Lake Tech provides certification to many different types of technicians to meet national standards giving them the ability to sell products in the global market. Lake Area Tech staff is exporting knowledge and training which in turn brings new dollars to South Dakota and the Watertown area.
