Shopko Commits to Milbank, SD
Monday, April 13, 2015
After months of uncertainty and negotiation, it has been announced that a Shopko Hometown store will open in the building on Milbank’s Morningside Drive which housed the ALCO store for 27 years. The official confirmation was made public Monday.
“We are thrilled that Shopko has decided to open a Shopko Hometown in Milbank,” said Bobbie Bohlen, executive director of the Grant County Development Corporation (GCDC).
Bohlen gives credit to Roger Bird of Bird Realty and Auction, Inc., for shepherding the process that resulted in Shopko coming to Milbank. “He convinced Shopko representatives to take a look at this ALCO store, because it was not on the original list that they were interested in,” she said.
“Shopko, an affiliate of Sun Capital, Inc., did not receive any tax incentives or any special consideration from the city or state to come to Milbank,” Bohlen said. She noted that the GCDC assisted Bird in the negotiations which led to Shopko reconsidering the Milbank ALCO store.
The city has agreed to address water drainage in the area of Morningside Drive to help alleviate occasional water issues, according to Jason Kettwig, city administrator.
The Milbank Shopko Hometown store is expected to create 20 jobs with a projected annual payroll of $250,000. “While no official date has been given, the time frame we are hearing is that the company will begin remodeling the building in mid- to late-April,” Bohlen said. The building, which is slightly less than 18,000 square feet, is being leased by the firm.
